Starting Point: Malltraeth

Malltraeth is a small village located on the southwestern coast of Anglesey, known for its beautiful estuary and wildlife-rich surroundings. The village is a great starting point for exploring the coastal paths and scenic landscapes of the island.

Route Overview

  • Distance: Approximately 5 miles (8 kilometers) one way.
  • Duration: Around 2 to 2.5 hours one way, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.
  • Difficulty: Moderate. The path includes varied terrain with some gentle inclines and sections that may be muddy or uneven.

Detailed Walk Description

  1. Starting at Malltraeth:

    • Begin your walk in the village of Malltraeth. There is parking available near the village center. From here, head towards the estuary following the signs for the Anglesey Coastal Path.
    • Cross the Malltraeth Cob, a long embankment that offers stunning views of the estuary and is a great spot for birdwatching.
  2. Following the Coastal Path:

    • Once across the Cob, follow the Anglesey Coastal Path markers. The path takes you through marshland and along the edge of Newborough Forest. The terrain can be muddy in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
    • Enjoy the varied landscape as you walk, with a mix of open fields, forest edges, and coastal views. The path is generally well-marked but can be narrow and uneven in places.
  3. Towards Aberffraw:

    • Continue following the coastal path as it heads west towards Aberffraw. This section of the walk offers beautiful views of the coastline and the open sea.
    • As you approach Aberffraw, you’ll walk along sandy beaches and possibly some rocky sections. Aberffraw is a small village with historical significance and is worth exploring if you have the time.
  4. Aberffraw to St. Cwyfan's Church (Church in the Sea):

    • From Aberffraw, continue westward along the coastal path. The path here offers dramatic sea views and a more rugged coastline.
    • After about 2 miles, you will reach St. Cwyfan's Church, also known as the Church in the Sea. The church is situated on Cribinau, a small tidal island accessible by a causeway at low tide.
  5. Exploring St. Cwyfan's Church:

    • St. Cwyfan's Church is a picturesque and tranquil spot, offering panoramic views of the sea and coastline. It dates back to the 12th century and has a rich history.
    • Be sure to check the tide times before you visit, as the causeway to the church is only accessible at low tide. The surrounding area is perfect for photography and quiet reflection.
